Chapter 38

Charlie entered the intake center with several coffees for everyone—carrying them precariously—and a bag of pastries she’d picked up at a local bakery on Market Street. They weren’t the rich buttery muffins from The Kitchen Witch Café, but they would have to do. She had more than pastries on her mind right now because the more she thought about the new special investigator, the worse she felt about him.

Inside, she found Ben and Marigold still going through the video.

“Any luck?” Charlie asked and placed the carrier with coffee down on the top of the receptionist’s desk.

“No,” Marigold said. She stood up and stretched her back, making a little mewling sound. “I’m so stiff. I’ve been sitting too long.” She spotted the coffees and smiled. “Is one of those for me?”

“Of course,” Charlie said. “I also picked up pastries at some little French bakery on Market Street.”

“Hoo. I love pastries. Did you get any cinnamon rolls?” Marigold asked.

“There are some cinnamon twists as well as cream cheese Danish with a cherry jelly and bear claws, which are my favorite. I didn’t know what everyone would like,” she said. “How’s Athena?”

Ben gave her a somber look. “She’s okay. She understands what’s happening. And you know her. She’s very optimistic and determined. She’s certain she can fix the video. But I can’t let her touch it until she’s been interviewed.”

“Sure. Which is too bad because we really need her expertise. But we can’t have any sense of impropriety, I suppose.”

“No, we can’t,” Ben said. He took a coffee and two sugars from the tray to sweeten the hot liquid.

“I’ll keep working on it. I’m not quite the genius that Athena is when it comes to all things technical, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve,” Marigold said.

“Sure.”

The new turn in investigation raised so many questions. What would happen to Athena? Was she in trouble? Would this person push her hard? Charlie had sensed a barrier inside Athena’s mind when she had touched her earlier. It might take some very gentle prodding to help her move past it. Depending on whether the barrier was psychological or magical, it might even take a spell. When she pressed her mind against whatever it was, it stung Charlie like a bee.

“Charlie, did you talk to your family?”

“No. And I’d rather not involve them, if possible.”

“I know. But at some point, we have to interview them. Especially Evangeline. She may be harboring Daphne.”

“Right,” Charlie said. “I hadn’t thought of that. We should also make a list of all her friends and clients and talk to them as well.” Charlie helped herself to one of the bear claw pastries and placed it on a napkin. Thinking of all the people they needed to talk to filled her with dread. “This is not going to be an easy investigation. People are not going to want to turn on her. Even if they thought she was actually capable of murder. No one wants to hurt her.”

“I know,” Ben nodded.
